Yolanda López Portrait of the Artist
San José Museum of Art Exhibition Poster
In 1979, Yolanda López created a body of photographs capturing a dignified and nuanced portrayal of Chicana womanhood. As part of the larger series documenting everyday life in the San Francisco Mission District, López began photographing the all-female car club, Las Santas Locas, whose lowrider Volkswagen Beetles won a competition in a male-dominated arena. This portrait of the Las Santas Locas is an indelible feminist image of defiant joy.
Digital print of the black-and-white photographs of the Las Santas Locas, from the series Life in the Mission, 1979, printed 2021
